English:
This page shows photos of many of the Second Company tanks and crews. Where possible I've accompanied a photo with a comment on the crews (within quotes) from notes I found amongst Gaston's papers. I think they were written to aid Henry Maule in research for his book about the Division Leclerc "Out of the Sand".

Though shot before 1946, I am uncertain regarding the copyright of the ones my father didn't have negatives for. Several of those have « Reportages Photographiques Adolphe Picoche » stamped on the back with the request that, if used, then credit must be given to Adolphe Picoche, which I have done.

Given they are used entirely non-commercialy, simply to honour the men of Free France, I hope their use will be considered "fair usage" and will not arouse disapproval. For readers I will point out that naturally, none of the sites photos may be copied for commercial use or be used in a manner that brings Les Forces Français Libre or any of its men into disrepute.

If you would like to see a full size scan of a photo, then click its thumbnail. But be warned, the large copies are up to 2 meg each to download.

I've reproduced the crew table from the Appendix of General de Witasse book in each Platoon section below. If the publisher or the General's family feel I am breaching their copyright I will of course immediately remove them. They present the numerous changes in crew line up very clearly.
However, I have taken the liberty of making three adaptations.
1. The alignment of some table elements in the rows in the book were ambiguous, so I've tried to re-align them here so they agree with the sequence of events described within the text of the book.
2. I've added in any forenames of crew that I could find, from "L'Odyssée" text, lists of veteran's from "Caravane, in Memoriam", the revue of the 2ème DB Veterans Association, the "Annuaire" (contact list) of the 2nd DB, and Maurice Amzallag from the crew of Arcis sur Aube. Even within "L'Odyssée" the spelling of some names is variable, so where there are variations I've taken the spelling used by a member of the same crew as the most likely to be correct since many crew members kept in written contact.
3. I've added rows to incorporate the data from the lists of company wounded and killed from the book's other two appendixes to complete the picture of why these crew members moved between tanks (also added an extra line for the tank Grussenheim which the book omitted). I hope these alterations consitute an improvement to the tables.

The following information is from the book "L'Odyssée de la Deuxième Compagnie de Chars" by Général Jacques de Witasse, published by Éditions Lyonnaises D'Art et D'Histoire. It is a wonderful account (in french) of life in a WW2 tank company, both at rest and in the thick of the fight.
The Second Tank Company consisted of:
Command Platoon:
Tanks "Austerlitz" (with Captain de Witasse), "Iéna" (After her destruction, replaced by Iéna 2) and "Moscowa". Radio Half-Track, "Terre de France". Jeep, "Die Rache" and motorcycle "Luneville".
Supply Platoon: 4 Dodge 6x6 Trucks (fuel/munitions, bureau, kitchen and a spare truck towing a 57mm anti-tank cannon) plus Breakdown Half-Track.
Three Platoons of 5 tanks each:
1st Platoon. "Montmirail" (Command tank, Lieutenant Michard, "Champaubert" (After her destruction, replaced by Champaubert 2), "Arcis-sur-Aube", "Montereau" (After her destruction, replaced by Montereau 2), "Romilly".
2nd Platoon. "Friedland" (Command tank, Lieutenant Lacoste), "Ulm", "Auerstaedt", "Lützen", "Baützen".
3rd Platoon. "Wagram" (Command tank, Lieutenant de La Bourdonnaye), "Eylau", "Essling", "Elchingen" (After her destruction, replaced by Elchingen 2, after Elchingen 2 was also destroyed, replaced by Elchingen 3), "Eckmühl".
Full Company strength was 18 tanks.
After the losses at Grussenheim the company received three replacement tanks. Grussenheim, Petitmont and Bertrambois. Then, because two of the tanks that had been considered as destroyed (L'Ulm and Baützen?) were restored to a fighting state by the Deuxième's excellent workshop crews, the company appears to have ended its war with a complement of 20 tanks.

Left to right : Captain Jacques de Witasse (Company Commander), Alain de Sancy, Co-Driver, Sgt Georges Commeinhes (new recuit and new commander of Austerlitz) and Roger Labarrère, Gunner. [ Captain de Witasse, the Company commander had initially used Austerlitz as the Company command tank. However on their first hard battle, in the Forêt d'Écouves he realised how restricting this arrangement was. Not only was manouver difficult when confined to one tank, the view of the battlefield was extremely resticted. He dismounted from Austerlitz and spent the rest of the war walking ahead of his troops guiding the action. A soldier of extraordinary courage and care for his men. This left Austerlitz for several days with a 4 man crew. Sgt Georges Commeinhes, an experienced tank commander from the battle for France in 1940 bumped into the Company and was immediately adopted and placed as Commander of Austerlitz by Captain de Witasse. The Vichy-American brokered ban on new recruits to the Free French got the respect it deserved. Notice the large pits in the turret armour above the driver hatch. This was caused a few days before by the mortar that decapitated Michel le Saoût and killed Bernard Guinlat.]

Montmirail Bois de Boulogne. (1.9 Mb)

Blessé à Paris 25 août 1944, a survécu. Photo Adolphe Picoche.

"Montmirail, Bois de Boulogne, Paris. A very lucky tank! Hit by armour piercing shells on three different occasions but repaired each time. Tank hit on the turret at the Foret d'Écouves, Normandy on 11 August 1944. Hit on the turret at Petitmont on 16 November 1944. Hit on turret by an infantryman with a bazooka in Grussenheim 28 January 1945. Second tank into Paris on 24 August 1944. The tank is still frequently used on remembrance parades as is Romilly.
At back is Mme Gandon, a passer-by photographed with us, who subsequently mothered the crew and Lt Louis Michard, tank and platoon commander, a trainee priest up until his mobilisation in 1939. Wounded in Belgium in 1940 and evacuated to England. Answered General de Gaulle's call for volunteers of 18 June 1940. Was my tank commander from January 1940 to January 1945. Wounded again in Normandy on 11 August 1944. Treated and given blood transfusions at a US field hospital. Discharged himself eight days later and came back to us, his head shaved and a bandage round it. Killed 28 January 1945 in our last 15 minutes of combat. A very cruel fate for such a nice man. I felt angered when I read Erwan Bergot's description of Lieutenant Michard [In the book "La 2me D.B."].
Front (left to right) myself [Gaston Eve] Volunteer of 1940. Wounded at Rambervillers 1st October 1944, burnt to face and arms at Valencay 3rd March 1945. I lost my hair, eyebrows, eyelashes and moustache. I didn't need a shave for some time! Odette Lampin who I met during the street fighting in Paris on 25 August 1944. We married when the war was over. We had seven children: There is between us a profound bond of love and respect.
Paul Lhopital, gun loader. Escaped from France through Spain and joined us in 1943 to fight on. Wounded in Paris 25 August 1944, survived. Marc Casanova, Co-driver and machine gunner. Joined us from Marakesh in 1943 aged 19, survived. Étienne Florkowski, an experience tanker, joined us from Djibouti. M. Gandon, husband of Mme Gandon. Befriended us in Paris. Sgt Georges Commeinhes. One of the many gaps in our ranks was filled by him when he volunteered at the liberation of the city. He had served in tanks prior to 1939 and was a Parisian born and bred, photographed with us but was placed in the tank Austerlitz and was killed on 23 November 1944 by a sniper bullet to the head on the Fort Kléber, Strasbourg."
Photo Adolphe Picoche.

"The Champaubert. Third tank into Paris late on 24 August 1944. Tank destroyed at Anglemont at the foot of the Vosge mountains on 2nd October 1944. Four out of the five crew were killed. The fifth was badly wounded. Left to right: Léo Jouhet, killed in the tank, was the driver. One of the oldest among us at 35 years. Joined in 1943 from the Ivory Coast when we were still in Tripolitaine. Married in Algiers in the short time before we came back to England for the Normandy landings, to a lovely French lady of his own age. Georges Brice, (from another crew). Léo Jouhet's closest friend who also came with him from the Ivory Coast. Survived the war. Daniel Renou, is here photographed beside his brother, but was from the crew of Iéna and was killed in November 1944 age 20, six weeks after his brother George. George Renou, killed in tank aged 18. A really nice and friendly boy. He and his brother were put into seperate crews in the hope that at least one would go home to Tunis, from where they came to join us. They are buried in the same cemetary in eastern France. Roger Norcy, Gunner, Killed in tank. A Breton and volunteer of 1940. A very nice young man of 21 with calm and quiet habits.
Not in photograph: Two members of the crew with Léo Jouhet, Georges Renou and Roger Norcy. Roger Thomas, killed in tank and Sergeant Yves Triolet, tank commander, very badly wounded [wounded the day before Champaubert was destroyed, by a mine exploding whilst clearing a barricade on a forest road]. Returned to fight on.
The Champaubert was destroyed in an attack which it made with my own tank the Montmirail along a heavily wooded road. At one stage we saw ahead of us a barn. After years of experience we failed to think that the doors might be thrown open and that a German tank would catch us unawares." Photo Adolphe Picoche.

"The crew of Wagram, Paris. The tank was damaged but remained in service. At front is Lt Geoffrey de la Bourdonnaye, commander of the 3rd Platoon. A volunteer of 1940. A good and kind man and the complete officer. Killed on 28 January 1945 at Grussenheim at about 1pm when, as he was outside and ahead of his tank in a wood trying to see what was ahead, the area was shelled by the Germans. The shells exploded in the trees and he was hit in the chest by shrapnel. Behind and to his right, with goggles, Bernard Tronel, tank driver. Survived. At rear with his back showing Albert Moal, survived the war in Europe then volunteered to fight in Vietnam in 1945. I don't remember the name of the 5th member of the crew whose face is hidden by the gun. [Jean Gordot, killed at Anglemont 2 Oct 1944] To the left of Moal is Michel Philippon (cousin of Claude Philippon), survived. De la Bourdonnaye, Tronel, Moal and Philippon were all 1940 volunteers. There were only one or two crews with such a number of Free French volunteers in them by then." Photo Adolphe Picoche.
